Usage Statistics for www.DruryWriting.com

Why we do this site. We’re a family enterprise—a bunch of Drurys who write here as our contribution to the church
and Christians. There are six of
us. We have four ministers, two
educators, and a stay-at-home mom (Dad Drury counts twice). We don’t do this
for money and get no kickback for any links to Amazon.com or anywhere else.
We might add a link to a book we’ve written but the entire enterprise is a
time-and-money pit for us not a for-profit venture. We are a family who likes to think, read,
debate and argue. Yet we also have a
practical side to us so everything posted is not heady but sometimes quite
useful. This page is where we post our stats.
It is like our state-of-the-church report to our “members”—you guys
who visit here. In a way it records
your “votes” on our site. Though you can’t technically vote us off the web,
you could accomplish that by simply not visiting our site. 93% of the people who visit this site do
not respond. (sort
of like your early service? ;-) But
we can still “see” you in these stats—so we keep writing. If you want to “vote us out” simply quick
visiting and the visits will drop and we’ll quit spending four hours a week writing.
While these numbers may be totally boring to you—they are to us our
“attendance figures.” We can see our congregation—about 800 of you
every day, and that motivates us to keep writing, even if you never post a
response or send an email. We know you’re there and that’s encouragement
enough for us. --The Drurys…

Now, about the numbers: If you’re nerdy (or just plain nosey) the stats
for the www.Drurywriting.com site
are posted here periodically sort of like a church reports attendance figures
to their district or conference. These
are figures for the entire Drurywriting
site—including Dave, John, Keith and their spouses, not just the www.TuesdayColumn.com part of it where
Keith posts. Like a church’s attendance reports there can be lots of “spin” on
the numbers. So some thoughts:
1. “Hits” are a meaningless number.
A “hit” is recorded every time a computer requests something from the
site. So, that means when a person loads
a page with ten pictures on it—eleven “hits” are recorded (one for the page,
and one for each picture it went and loaded to put on the page.) A “hit” is recorded every time Google comes
to the site and reads everything there.
So hits are as meaningless as adding one to the attendance at worship
for each thing the worshipper did—sang a song, listened to the prayer, nodded
at the sermon. (OK, some of you pastors
LIKE that way of counting—stop it!) But
if you insist on knowing hits, there are about 6,000 “hits” a day on this
site—but that means nothing at all, really—it is “visits” that counts.
2. “Visits’ are a better measure.
One “visit” is recoded when one computer visits a site and stays there
clicking around even for an hour. If you
visit www.drurywriting.com home
page, then click on Keith then see the TuesdayColumn.com home page and click on the
week’s Tuesday Column you’ve piled up a bunch of “hits” but only one
“visit.” Same when the Google spy
checks out what we’ve been writing about and looks at every single page on the
server—that would generate a bezillion “hits” but
only one “visit.” A visit is how you
count your church attendance. If a person come to Sunday school, worship, stays for a
carry-in they still only count as ONE attending. That’s a “visit” and it means one computer
somewhere in the world came to the site and stayed from a few seconds to an
hour or more. It is a true “attendance”
figure. This site gets about 800
“visits” a day (Feb, 2006)—meaning about 800 people on an average day stop in. It’s a nice attendance and keeps us motivated
to keep writing. (Responses to the
Tuesday Column are done through blogger.com and are not included in any of
these numbers)
