Trips to Haiti are up; Trips to the Altar are Down

My pastor, Rev. Steve Deneff is preaching on the cross during lent at my church. Last week he tossed out a provocative sentence during the message. He said, “Trips to Haiti are up; trips to the altar are down.”

I was going to write a column on his statement this week. But the more I thought about it the more I wanted to just let the statement stand alone without my commentary and let readers comment on it. Then I decided to write a few questions for processing his statement… so here they are:

  1. What did he mean by “Trips to Haiti are up; trips to the altar are down?”
  2. Is he describing your church too, or only in his own church?
  3. Is he describing some sort of trend in the church?
  4. Why is this shift happening if he’s right?
  5. Is this shift good or bad?
  6. If it is bad what’s bad about it?
  7. If it is good, what is good about it?

I’d like to hear your comments…

So what do you think?
