Call to Worship – Good Friday 2005
By David Drury
Welcome to this time of worship on Good Friday here
at
This is a day to remember, to grieve, and to hope.
To remember…
That what Jesus Christ did
on this day two thousand years ago was for us.
That he was sinless but bared the penalty for our sin. We take time today to do what we do not like
to do – remember our own sin. To remember that our lives are not our own. Today we remember that we are crucified with
Christ, and we no longer live, but Christ lives in us. The life we live in the body we live by faith
in the Son of God, who loved us and gave himself for us.
And this is a day to grieve…
Because
Jesus did truly die. He experienced pain we have not experienced
nor can even imagine. He died that day
on the cross, and while we have the grace of knowing the rest of the story, his
disciples, his friends, his own mother, did not. They grieved in that moment in a way that showed
their love of him. May we love him and
mourn that people much like us crucified him.
“The word became flesh, and made his dwelling among us… but the world
did not recognize him…. He came to his own, but his own did not receive
him. Therefore we grieve this injustice
today. For we hold the nail.
But this is a day to hope…
Because of all that Christ
told his disciples even before his crucifixion, we know that there was no
finality to Good Friday. It is not the
end of the story. There is more to
come. And we not only tell the story, we
hope for ourselves. This life is not the
end of our story either. We look to the
day when we too will experience our own good Fridays, and the power and person
who conquered death and the grave, will not only save us and use us as he
already is… but will raise us too from the dead.
